With increasingly large stormwater flows discharging into a (now) formed tidal culvert channel was causing big issues for a community near Saxton Creek, Nelson.
Flooding was a common occurrence in the local communities near Saxton Creek and the council had been looking to improve stormwater discharge but faced very tight site constraints.
While stream upgrades usually start downstream and progressively work upstream, the work was reversed to cater for subdivisions upstream and to dovetail with work Tasman District Council needed to do along Champion Road.
These early stages were especially challenging, as Council had to work with up to 40+ individual residential landowners, including several ownership changes over the course of design work.
This project was subject to a great deal of varying and challenging scenarios even before site works could commence. The catchment for this creek passes through many residential built-up areas, industrial estates, through several reserves etc. and compounded with ongoing extreme weather conditions.
Over the eight construction years of the project, Nelson experienced more than its fair share of major weather events with Cyclone Fehi and Gita in 2018, followed by the August 2022 weather bomb, more major flooding in May 2023. In the 2022 weather event, the amount of water passing through the diversion pipes was so powerful it shifted the large concrete blocks anchoring the pipes.
With these huge, expected stormwater and tidal flows, the Hynds UpFlo® filter was designed in as it can take multiple inlet pipes, of varied sizes & orientations plus comes to site typically ready to ‘plug & play.’
Notably the UpFlo® filter has no internal moving parts or the need for any external power sources and works 24/7.
The UpFlo® offers the best value for council / ratepayers’ money and being made by a NZ family-owned business (Hynds family) gives back to local communities by way of job creation and finance, while ensuring quality control for some stormwater peace of mind.
