Every Little Improvement Adds Up

In 2021, the Hynds Group set an ambitious goal: reduce waste sent to landfill by 25% by 2025. This was a particularly challenging target, given that the business already had strong waste diversion practices in place, leaving limited opportunities for further reduction. At the time, the baseline figure stood at 536 tonnes of waste to landfill.

By 2025, the Hynds Group had successfully reduced this figure to 411 tonnes—a 23% reduction. While slightly below the original target, this represents a substantial and meaningful improvement. Importantly, this is an absolute reduction and does not account for the growth of the business or the addition of new sites across the country.

Waste audits across Hynds Group sites did not identify any single major opportunity for diversion. Progress was achieved through numerous incremental improvements, including the introduction of an internal pallet return system, the implementation of worm farms, and clearer bin signage for staff and customers.

James Willoughby, Executive HSEQS, reflects on the achievement: “Seeing such consistent improvements across multiple sites is incredibly encouraging. Not only are we reducing our environmental impact, but initiatives like these can translate into tangible cost savings—potentially tens of thousands of dollars annually—from reduced landfill fees and more efficient resource use.”

Together, these actions demonstrate the Group’s sustained commitment to reducing waste and improving environmental outcomes, proving that even small, coordinated initiatives can deliver significant results.
