Pembroke Heights, which overlooks Lake Wānaka, and the mouth of Clutha River, consists of a 400-lot development. The Queenstown Lakes District Council required this site to have excellent site flood control for general stormwater flows and protection to the existing downstream infrastructure & local residential settlement, plus for the Clutha River (Mata-Au).
Protection for one of New Zealand’s most significant and scenic rivers – Clutha River, is New Zealand’s largest and fastest flowing river with a huge history from pre-Māori culture to old gold mining days, to now hydropower generation and a tourist scenic attraction is of an upmost concern.
Due to the terrain of this ~300,000m2 (~30ha.) upper catchment / development, and to protect the already established residential development and infrastructure below, coupled with New Zealand’s increasingly changeable weather conditions, site flows needed to be professionally managed and controlled onsite.
Design & Solution
LandPro Consultants together with Riley consultants, designed for the installation of a Hynds HydroBrake® Optimum flow control unit. Not only will it protect the downstream environment and infrastructure, but also offers considerable financial saving with the reduction in size of the detention ponds upstream.
Every Hydro-Brake® Optimum flow control is individually designed, sized, and precision-engineered to meet the specific requirements of the site network and the receiving environment in which it is to be installed, enabling engineers to deliver tailored protection against upstream and downstream flooding.
This offers specific SuDS and green infrastructure projects with built-in protection against storm events, management of everyday surface water runoff and the ability to build with future effects of climate change in mind.
With this installation, a predesigned unit was fitted at the base of a Hynds 3-metre diameter concrete manhole chamber, approximately 4 metres deep. The Consultants also allowed for the fitting of an extra-large scruffy dome on top of this structure to help keep any residents safe while allowing for easy and essential visual inspections of the unit.
Hydro-Brake® Flow Controls already provide significant savings in surface water storage over conventional flow controls. Now the Hydro-Brake® Optimum offers up to a further 15% saving when compared to other vortex flow control devices. By saving on surface water storage, Hydro-Brake® Optimum therefore promises outstanding savings in excavation costs and frees up more land for development to maximise the developers’ return on investment.
