In response to the critical needs arising from the 2023 Auckland Anniversary Weekend flooding events, Hynds partnered with Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters team to implement a crucial stormwater pipe upgrade at College Hill. This vital project now features our innovative low-carbon concrete pipes as a foundational component, marking a significant step in sustainable infrastructure development.
This project marks the first time Healthy Waters has deployed low-carbon pipes, showcasing Auckland Council’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. For us at Hynds, this collaboration is a testament to our ongoing dedication to sustainability and a major step forward in our journey towards more environmentally responsible manufacturing.
Our Group Sustainability Manager, Jackson MacFarlane, emphasises the impact of this achievement:
"By using these pipes for the project, we were able to avoid over 4.4 tons of CO2eq emissions. This substantial reduction is a direct result of our advanced manufacturing process, which incorporates supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) like fly ash and blast-furnace slag. These materials effectively substitute traditional cement, the most carbon-intensive element in concrete production, leading to a remarkable 22 percent reduction in emissions compared to conventional concrete pipes."
The 2.5-metre Hynds LC® pipes, with a 600mm internal diameter, are designed not only for durability and performance but also to align with Auckland Council’s ambitious embodied carbon reduction targets. We are honoured to support their vision, which is clearly outlined in Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland’s Climate Plan, aiming for a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050.
The installation, which commenced on Monday, October 9th, for the pipe section running from the intersection of Beaumont Street and Victoria Street West to England Street, is a clear demonstration of how sustainable materials can be integrated into large-scale urban infrastructure projects. We’re pleased to see the successful completion of this $2.86 million project. Our pipes are now actively contributing to a more resilient and sustainable Auckland, a testament to the hard work and dedication that went into this vital infrastructure upgrade.
This initiative at College Hill is more than just a pipe installation; it’s a powerful statement about the future of construction and our collective responsibility to innovate for a greener tomorrow. We are committed to continuing our research and development into sustainable products, ensuring that Hynds Group remains at the forefront of environmentally conscious manufacturing for New Zealand’s vital infrastructure.
