Despite COVID-19 throwing a spanner in the works, the HPS team ensured the Kiwirail project stayed on track and was delivered on time.

The manufacture and delivery of 910No. Precast Platform Coping Pavers and 151No. Precast Platform Frontage Walls for the Trentham to Upper Hutt duplication project was a pressurised project with tight turnaround times and an unreliable supply of materials.

The project called for a bespoke solution offering design and innovation in collaboration with the contractor and KiwiRail to produce products beyond the normal scope of offerings readily available.

The design of the job meant that a new Rekli Liner needed to be sourced to create the unique Paver moulds and fabrication of a specialised reo jib required to fast track the reo tying and reduce the time by 2MH per cage. Added to the complexities of the project was the fact that the steel supplier closed its operations in Palmerston North and as a result, the factory was under pressure to source steel tiers at very short notice.

Engineered Products Manager (Capital), Neil Cowie, said that while all project partners had to go above and beyond to meet the needs of the customer, it has resulted in a solid placing for future KiwiRail work.

“We now own the moulds and designs for what seems to be the new KiwiRail Standard for platform walls and coping pavers to be used for platform upgrades. So this puts us in a very strong position going forward.”
